The Art of Melody: Stretching vs. Softness 🌊
Welcome to Lesson 8. Now that you’ve mastered the basics, it’s time to add “Rhythm” to your recitation. This lesson is divided into two beautiful parts:
1. Madd (The Stretch) 📏
Elongating the sound for 2 counts. It’s strong and clear.
(Baa, Buu, Bii)
2. Lin (The Softness) 🍃
Pronouncing the letter gently and easily without stretching.
(Bau, Bai)

The Science of Sound: Madd vs. Lin 🧬
Understand the “Physics” behind the two sounds.
1. Madd (The Stretch)
“Madd” means to extend. Imagine you are pulling a rubber band.
- 🔥 Strong Sound: It holds its place firmly.
- ⏱️ Timing: Exactly 2 beats (One-Two).
- 👀 Visual: Alif (ا) matches Fatha.
Waw (و) matches Damma.
Ya (ي) matches Kasra.
2. Lin (The Softness)
“Lin” means softness. Imagine water flowing gently over a stone.
- 🌊 Soft Sound: It slides easily from the mouth.
- ⏱️ Timing: Shorter than Madd (unless stopping).
- 👀 Visual: The Fatha is always the boss here!
( ـَ وْ ) or ( ـَ يْ )
💡 Golden Tips for Lesson 8
1. The “Banana” Rule for Madd 🍌
Think of Madd letters as “elastic”. You must stretch them! “Ba” is short, but “Baaa” is long. If you don’t stretch, you change the meaning of the Quran.
2. The “Slider” Rule for Lin 🛝
Lin letters (Waw & Ya with Sukoon) are soft. Imagine sliding down a slide. Say “Au” (like in ‘Out’) and “Ai” (like in ‘Eye’) smoothly without stopping or jerking.
3. Don’t Mix Them!
Madd: Needs movement compatibility (Fatha+Alif, Damma+Waw).
Lin: Is ALWAYS preceded by Fatha (ـَ وْ / ـَ يْ). The Fatha is the boss here!

💬 Common Questions About Lesson 8
Expert answers to master Madd and Lin letters.
What is the difference between Madd and Lin?
Madd (Stretch): The vowel matches the letter (Fatha+Alif, Damma+Waw). You MUST stretch it (2 counts). Example: Buu.
Lin (Soft): The letter is preceded by Fatha only. You pronounce it softly and easily without stretching (unless stopping). Example: Bau.
Why are they called “Lin” letters?
“Lin” (لين) means Softness or Ease. These letters (Waw & Ya with Sukoon after Fatha) come out of the mouth effortlessly and smoothly, unlike strong letters.
How do I pronounce Waw Lin (ـَوْ)?
Round your lips as if you are saying the English word “Cow” or “How”. Keep it short and soft: Khaw-f.
How do I pronounce Ya Lin (ـَيْ)?
Spread your lips as if you are saying the English word “Day” or “Eye”. It sounds like ‘Ay’. Example: Bay-t.
Should I stretch Lin letters when continuing?
No. If you are connecting words (Wasl), Lin letters have Zero stretch. They are just pronounced clearly. You only stretch them (2, 4, or 6 counts) if you STOP on the word (Madd Lin Arid).
My child confuses “Buu” (Madd) with “Bau” (Lin). Tips?
Focus on the lips!
Buu (Madd): Lips stay circled forward the whole time.
Bau (Lin): Mouth starts open (Fatha) then circles (Waw). It’s a movement.
Why is Alif not a Lin letter?
Because Alif always follows a Fatha. It can never follow a Damma or Kasra. So, Alif is always a Madd letter (stretchy), never a Lin letter (soft/easy in the same way).
Melody Unlocked! 🎵
You can now differentiate between the “Stretch” of Madd and the “Ease” of Lin. Your recitation is gaining structure and beauty.
